Immigration to Canada Overview

IRCC’s federal immigration authority, admits 300,00 immigrants to Canada on an annual basis under the Economic class and the Family Reunification Class.

The Economic Class

The professionals and the skilled workers who wish to pursue and gain permanent residency status in Canada must show an upfront interest in settling in Canada. This is however the main selection factor out of all the economic programs that encapsulate suitable education, relevant work experience, or work experience in a high demand occupation and language abilities under one of Canada’s official language.

IRCC handles Canada’s federal skilled worker immigration program using the Express Entry System. Under this system, applicants who are eligible after fulfilling certain basic criteria can submit an online profile to the express entry pool under the three federal immigration programs:

  • Federal Skilled Trades
  • Federal Skilled Worker
  • Canadian Experienced Class
  • Provincial Nominee Immigration Program

The profiles of candidates in the pool are ranked against each other, under a comprehensive ranking system. The highest-ranked candidates are considered for an invitation to apply for permanent residence under Canada’s regular CRS draw. Candidates who receive an invitation must apply must submit the completed application with no delay within 90 days. The government aims to process the cases in only 6 months.

The Family Class

Under the family reunification class, current policies for sponsorships promote the reunion in Canada of Canadian Citizens and permanent residents with their close relatives. Eligible relatives under this sponsorship programs are:

a spouse, common-law partner or conjugal partner 18 years of age or older;
an unmarried dependent child under the age of 22;
a parent or grandparent;
an orphaned sibling, nephew, niece or grandchild, unmarried and under 18 years of age; or any other relative where the sponsor has none of the above relatives or family members, in Canada or abroad.

Parents and Grandparents who wish to visit their loved ones, called Parents and Grandparents Super Visa. This is a multi-entry visitor valid for 10 years where visitors are allowed to stay for up to two years without having to exit the country.

Federal Skilled

The BC Provincial Nominee Program offers three ways to become a permanent resident in B.C. Each pathway contains different categories you can apply under, depending on your National Occupational Classification skill level, job, or international student status. You may not require prior work experience in some categories.
